Free for the people we serve

Behind The 22 is for service members, veterans, first responders, and their families. Screeners, a BT22 profile, case review, advocacy support, and this research stay free for them. The people we serve are never asked to pay.

Funding comes from many places: individual gifts, foundations, public programs, and organizations that use the advanced tools. A single donor does not get to decide what the evidence says. That mix is how the work stays transparent and independent.

Helping veterans also helps cold cases

The same support that keeps care and research free also lets us offer law enforcement a free copy of the forensic analysis tools, for cold cases. A gift that helps a veteran or a first responder helps an agency look again at a case that has gone quiet.

Lived experience, inside the work

The paid team includes people who have lived through suicide loss, institutional harm, or medical failure. They receive training for this work, so what they know can help stop the same harm from reaching someone else.

The aim is to improve these systems from the inside out, with people who already know how the systems fail.

Behind The 22 is working toward nonprofit status and currently functions as a project under The Human Systems Risk Lab LLC. State nonprofit status is expected by January 1, 2027.
